Pierre-Michel Fontaine obtained his "Licence en droit" (Law degree) from the Faculty of Law of the University
of Haiti in 1960. Mr. Fontaine received a diploma in International Relations from the National School of Advanced
International Studies, State University of Haiti in 1961 with highest honors. He also holds a certificate in International
Law from The Hague Academy of International Law in the Netherlands. He received his Ph.D., from The Graduate School of
International Studies (now Josef Korbel School of International Studies), University of Denver, Colorado, USA (1968);
LL.M. Program, Yale Law School, New Haven, Connecticut, USA (1982-83).
Pierre-Michel Fontaine has been a member of numerous organizations including the American Society of International Law, Georgia Political Science Association (member, editorial board, Georgia Political Science Association Journal 1973-1975), USA International Studies Association (Founding member, International Political Economic Group; member, Task Force on Structures, Functions and Programs, 1976-1977), and Latin American Studies Association, USA. He has worked on the international front in Africa, Asia, and Europe for various international organizations since 1997 until present time. His experience includes a tenure in the Office of UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) as Chief of Legal Section and Assistant Representative (Legal) in Thailand (1983-86); Senior Legal Officer and Head of the Promotion of Refugee Law Section, Division of Refugee Law and Doctrine (now DIPS), Geneva (1986-90); Chief of Mission in China July 1990-Dec. 1992); Regional Representative for Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific (June 1993-Dec. 1995); Principal Advisor, Division of International Protection, Geneva (Dec. 1995-May 1997). He also serves in the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) as Director of the Office in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, during the crucial period preparatory to the transition government (4 May 2001-30 June 2003), interacting with the various parties to the conflicts in the country, as well as other internal and international stakeholders in the promotion of human rights and peace, not least through capacity-building for transition institutions and the training of governmental and non-governmental actors. He has contributed all over the world as guest lecturer, panelist, and to various publications. Professor Pierre-Michel Fontaine currently is a Lecturer for the International Relations Department and African-New Word Studies Program at Florida International University, Miami, FL (2007-08). He’s also a Lecturer for the Africana Studies Program, Latin American Studies Program, and International Studies Dept at the University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL (2006-present). He will be a Visiting Associate Professor as of January 2009. |
